Liseberg - Review 2019
In August 2019 we visited Liseberg in Sweden for the second time as part of a prize the channel won on Cupcakes and Coasters’ blog. Thanks again to everyone who voted for the channel - we really appreciate your votes! We had a great trip and loved getting back on all the rides at Liseberg. This time we were lucky enough to spend 2 days at the park, which meant we got to experience much more of what they have on offer. So let’s talk about exactly that!
The Rides
Helix
By far the best ride at the park (in our opinion) is Helix, the incredible MACK multi-launch coaster. To be honest, we were a little disappointed after our initial ride first thing in the morning. But wow does this thing warm up. By the end of the night Helix was exactly how we remembered it - the inversions were intense and the airtime hills perfectly ejector! We sat front row for one of our night rides, which was incredible as you could see the whole track lit up in front of you the entire time. If you have the chance to ride Helix at night DO NOT miss out - it’s something else!
Balder
Helix may be the ‘best’ roller coaster at Liseberg, but for us Balder is the most fun! On paper the layout would probably seem pretty unoriginal and repetitive to most. But boy does it work in real life! We absolutely loved getting thrown out of our seats over every airtime hill. The ride was especially crazy in the back car which is the row we chose pretty much every time. And just like Helix it offers a fantastic night ride that really shouldn’t be missed.
Valkyria
Valkyria is Liseberg’s newest roller coaster and, we would argue, the first to be heavily themed at the park. The level of detail in the Nordic theming both in the station and throughout the queue line is amazing. Because of this, Valkyria is easily one of the most attractive rides to simply stand and watch. We rode it several times across the two days and have one massive tip for you all - the front row is far better than the others. Seeing the full extent of that vertical drop makes all the difference, it’s awesome!
Lisebergbanan
Since our last visit we had forgotten how much of a punch this classic Schwarzkopf roller coaster actually packs. Some of the transitions are pretty harsh but they offer some great forces. It’s a huge part of the heritage of Liseberg which make it very special and having been constructed in 1987 it’s their oldest coaster left standing. It isn’t the smoothest roller coaster in the world, but it is incredibly unique and has some great interactions with Helix!
Other Rides
Apart from the four main roller coasters, Liseberg has quite a lot to offer. We absolutely loved Kållerado, the park’s rapids! They were extremely chaotic at moments without being too wet, which is just what you want really. Loke is another favourite of ours - the giant Intamin gyro swing. It’s a forceful flat ride with great airtime, and the views it offers are fantastic too. Speaking of views, AtmosFear, the huge drop tower is also another must do. Because it’s high up on the hill side you are pulled up extra high, allowing for a panoramic view of the park or city depending on where you sit. To sum it all up, Liseberg has a really diverse collection of rides. There’s something for everyone - from kiddie coasters, to thrilling flats!
Food
One of the things that most excites us about visiting a theme park (besides the rides of course) is the food selection, and Liseberg do not disappoint on this front. There’s so much choice, from chain restaurants like Max to Mexican fajitas! This time we tried the Thai and Indian curries which were really tasty. The only issue with the food at Liseberg is that the restaurants can get quite busy, especially at peak times of the day, so we would recommend eating during off-peak times if you want to avoid the queues.
LIVE Concert
Included as part of our prize this year was a three course dinner at Stjärnornas Krog overlooking the main stage in the park, during the live KraftWerk concert. The meal was an amazing experience for both of us - it was so unique to be eating a delicious meal while a live concert is happening right next to you. It’s something we won’t forget. We love that the park is able to offer experiences like this and it means they can attract a whole different group of people to the park - music lovers!
Behind the Scenes Tour
During our visit we were lucky enough to have been given a ‘behind the scenes tour’ by Pontus from guest services. The tour was amazing! We had never been on a tour like this in the past so we absolutely loved being able to see the maintenance sheds and operator booths of the four main coasters. It was really cool to go ‘backstage’ with Pontus and talk about the rich history of the park too. He knows the park like the back of his hand and was happy to answer all the questions we had. The highlight for us was being able to sign our names on Balder’s supports alongside all the other names. Thanks so much to the park and Pontus for taking us on this tour - it really made our trip special. You’ll be able to see what happened on the tour in a future video!
This was our second visit to the park and we loved it even more than the first time! Liseberg always has a great atmosphere which has a really positive impact on our enjoyment of the visit. It’s a well-rounded park with lots to do and some fantastic coasters. We absolutely love coming to Liseberg and hope to be back soon - hopefully to experience the park during a different time of the year, like Halloween…
